There were plans and designs for a new main station in Batavia Benedenstad (Batavia-Kota) as early as 1915. At that time, there were two railstations: North Station and South Station which was 200 metres to the south and higher-lying. In 1926, the building of the new station was set about seriously. The first rough design was drawn by FJL Ghijsels (AIA Bureau) and the definitive design made final on June 1927. In the definitive plan the layout of the front facade, with its arched entrance, is repeated on a smaller scale at both side of the station. The spacious station hall has a gallery around the first floor to give access to the various offices. Art deco ornamentation is used sparingly throughout the entire building. Great attention was alaso paid to the details of the booking offices, and the doors, and windows.
